Long guide: notices from A to Z

This page shows how long pages stay clear:

  • On the right is the automatic table of contents “On this page”. It follows as you scroll and highlights the current section. On this page it goes down to level 4 (front matter toc_max_heading_level: 4).
  • Right here at the top is a manual table of contents with jump links.
  • Every heading is a link itself: hovering shows a # you can use to copy the link to the section.
  • Rarely needed details are collapsible.

Preparation

Before you create your first notice, check the following.

Prerequisites

  • Plugin installed and activated
  • Notice texts agreed (e.g. with the legal team)
  • Target products or categories defined

Permissions

Only users with the role Edit products can create notices. You assign the role under Settings › System › Users & permissions.

tip

Create a dedicated role for editors that may only edit notices.

Planning

Think in advance about how many different notices you need. In practice, three to five text snippets cover most shops:

NoticeTypical use
Delivery restrictionDangerous goods, country restriction
Age restrictionAlcohol, media
Custom-madeNo exchange
Seasonal itemLimited availability

Text and colour

Keep the text short – at most two lines on a smartphone.

Good examples

  • “Ships within Germany only.”
  • “Sold only to persons aged 18 and over.”

Less good examples

  • “Please note that due to legal regulations we are unfortunately only able to ship this item within the Federal Republic of Germany.” – too long.

Position

The notice can appear in three places:

  1. Below the price (default) – most prominent.
  2. Below the buy button – right before the purchase decision.
  3. In the description tab – subtle, for supplementary information.
Why is there no position in the cart?

In the cart, the notice would only appear after the purchase decision. That defeats its purpose. There is a separate plugin for notices in the checkout.

Assign a notice

A notice only takes effect once it is assigned to products.

To individual products

  1. Open Catalogues › Products and select a product.
  2. Switch to the Notices tab.
  3. Select the notice from the list.

To whole categories

  1. Open Catalogues › Categories.
  2. Select the category and open the Notices tab.
  3. Enable For all products in this category.
warning

If a notice is assigned to a product directly, that one applies – the category notice is then not shown.

Via bulk edit

For many products at once: select products in the list, choose Bulk edit and set the notice in the Notices section.

Multiple languages

Notice texts are translatable. Switch the content language at the top of the Administration and maintain the text again.

If a translation is missing, the shop shows the text in the default language.

Frequently asked questions

Can a product have several notices?

No, exactly one notice is shown per product. Combine several statements into one text.

Are notices shown in emails?

No. Notices only appear on the product page in the shop.

Can I use HTML in the notice text?

No, for security reasons the text is output as plain text. Line breaks are preserved.

Troubleshooting

The notice is not shown

Check in this order:

  1. Is the plugin active?
  2. Is the notice assigned to the product (or its category)?
  3. Is today's date within the validity period?
  4. Was the cache cleared? Settings › System › Caches & indexes › Clear caches

The notice appears in the wrong language

Maintain the translation as described under Multiple languages.

The position is wrong

Some themes change the product page considerably. In that case contact your agency – technical details are in the developer guide.
